What is the fastest type of internet?

+

Fiber internet is the fastest type of internet connection. It uses cables made of bundled fiber-optic strands to transmit large amounts of data with light signals. Most fiber internet plans give you 1,000 Mbps speeds, although some providers can get you speeds of up to 2,000 Mbps or even 5,000 Mbps. Fiber is also the only type of internet that gives you symmetrical upload speeds—so your uploads will be just as fast as your downloads.

Why is my Google Fiber internet speed slower than advertised?

The speeds Google Fiber advertises are based on the maximum speed the internet connection is capable of, but these are not necessarily the speeds you will get on average. Fiber is a reliable connection, so it’s a good idea to look for other potential bottlenecks between your computer and the fiber network. Are you connecting over Wi-Fi? Are you using a network cable that has a lower speed than your plan? Any of these could result in your computer getting a lower internet speed than your connection supports.

About our Google Fiber internet speed test

The Google Fiber internet speed measures three things:

Download speed: The speed at which your device pulls data from the internet. Usually measured in Mbps or Gbps.

Upload speed: The speed at which your device sends data to the internet. Usually measured in Mbps or Gbps.

Latency (Ping): The time (measured in milliseconds) it takes for a signal to travel from your device to an internet server and back. Lower latency means your connection has a better response time for activities like gaming and livestreams.

How does the Google Fiber internet speed test work?

Our speed test connects to a nearby server and sends test data files back and forth. By comparing how long it takes for different files to go back and forth, the test can determine several different things about your connection. Generally, this reflects the speed of your home’s internet connection, but if there’s another bottleneck in your connection, such as a slow wireless router, this will impact the results of the test.

To get the most accurate measurement of your internet connection, plug your device directly into your router using an ethernet cable, rather than connecting wirelessly. You can also try connecting both ways to find out if your router is able to keep up with your internet connection, or if it might be time to upgrade to a faster router.
